Tulip tree

The tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is in the magnolia family and is native to the Eastern U.S. The leaves have four lobes and the flowers are orange and yellow, both reminiscent of the tulips. Here you can see the leftover bracts in the shape of a oblong pod, which forms after the flower petals drop. Inside is a woody "sword" as we used to call them as kids.
