Oregon white oak gall

You may already know about oak galls on Oregon white oak, but did you know that of you split one open with an iron hatchet it will produce an indigo colored ink? I learned this on a camping trip and my friend Michael said Native Americans knew of this phenomenon-- the iron in the metal reacts with the gall.
