Elms are falling (just the leaves)
Leaves that is. There are hundreds, thousands of serrated yellow leaves falling downtown around the library and parks. Portland has been trying to keep its elm trees disease-free, evidenced by one project to save the elm trees in Ladd's Addition and the maintenance of elm debree less than about a finger's width (~1/2") within Parks. The City of New Haven, Connecticut lost its American Elms to Dutch Elm disease decades ago. You can find some surprising before and after pictures of these great giants.
