Metasequoia glyptosgroboides is a mouthful to say and a curiosity in its own right. These trees were almost extinct in China and there are a small handful planted around Portland including the 2013 Heritage Tree of the Year at Hoyt Arboretum. Not as big as the coast redwoods native to the U.S., but an ancient species nonetheless. Did you know it is a deciduous evergreen and drops it's needles every year like a larch tree?
